The mission of the Sonoma County LGBTQI Giving Circle is to strengthen Sonoma County through collective funding that nurtures and develops programs to benefit the LGBTQI community.
Our members give to a collective fund that is then granted to Sonoma County 501 (c)(3) non-profit organizations according to members’ votes.
The Giving Circle was launched in April of 2014 and currently has 115 members. The LGBTQI Giving Circle Fund is managed by Community Foundation Sonoma County.
Together, We Are:
- Learning about the needs and opportunities for the LGBTQI community
- Encouraging and building a stronger network of people and resources
- Donating money to a pooled fund
- Deciding together how and to whom we will give those funds
- Fostering a greater sense of community and identity for LGBTQI people in Sonoma County
Fifty Giving Circle members gathered in November 2014 to articulate the Giving Circle’s top priorities for 2015. We agreed that, in the first year, the Giving Circle would focus on youth, elders, and community building. To explore these areas more thoroughly, we held a series of three educational forums—one on each focus area – for Giving Circle members. Each gathering offered a chance to meet local experts and to broaden our understanding of the Sonoma County LGBTQI community. After the gatherings, we solicited grant applications from non-profit organizations that focused on our priority areas.
In 2016, we held an educational forum about gender and hosted our first grant making workshop for members. This year, our educational forum focused on race and the LGBTQI community in Sonoma County. Because of a renewed focus on membership and engagement, 2017 also marks the development of our first website, and our first participation in Sonoma County Pride events.
